Rails Across America

As the title suggests, Rails Across America limits its scope to North America (Canada, United States and Mexico). Conceptually, the game is a cross between all of the titles listed above. Graphically, the game is similar to Railroad Tycoon 2. Like the Tycoon games, one of the objects of the game is to connect cities and move cargo. Rather than micromanaging individual consists (the cargo makeup of a given train), the income generated from an individual line is abstracted, not unlike 1830 (albeit more complex). Finally, there is the political game, using boardgame-like influence cards to attack opposing players, hopefully causing a loss of important prestige.

Flying Lab Software has taken time from their busy development schedule to answer a few questions on their new game, Rails Across America. Rail fans have enjoyed stellar titles in the past; Microproses' Railroad Tycoon, PopTop's Railroad Tycoon 2, and Avalon Hill's 1830 come to mind. The era of rail barons was marked with legendary rivalries, and this is where Flying Lab hopes to make their mark on the genre.

Railroad Tycoon II provided an excellent update of Sid Meier's original game concept. Railroad Tycoon II – The Second Century does what every great expansion pack should do: it adds a tremendous amount of added play value to its parent game. Designer Phil Steinmeyer and his crew at PopTop should be congratulated for bringing an engaging strategy game to life, and then perfecting it to its current state.

Railroad Tycoon II is a worthy successor to its illustrious namesake. Gameplay is deep and accommodates (nay, demands) a variety of playing styles. Railroad Tycoon II is visually impressive and the scenarios are well-conceived and immersive. If you can fight the urge to jump out of a high-rise window when your net worth cascades to zero, then you can enjoy perhaps the finest non-violent strategy game on the market today.
