the British Historican Games Society is hosting its championship next week.
The British Historical Games Society (BHGS) is hosting their annual convention BRITCON OLYMPIAD in conjunction with the UK National Wargames Championships to be held at the University of Manchester, Thursday 14th - Sunday 17th August. Once again the event is to be supported and attended by many of the prominent computer games companies and suppliers of wargames figures and accessories.
Table top wargaming can best be described as three dimensional chess played with hundreds of accurately researched and detailed miniature figurines on realistically modeled terrain. There are competitions set in various periods of history from Ancient times,
to World War 2. We even have sections that cater for future wars and fantasy gamers so there is pretty much something of interest for anyone interested in warfare or history throughout the ages. So if you fancy yourself as an arm-chair general then this is the place for you.
The National Convention brings together players and delegates from all over the British Isle, and also welcomes players from as far a field as the USA, Australia and from all over Europe. The event combines a full trade show including a huge bring & buy area, together with several participation & demonstration games which are designed to involve the general public and day visitors.
The now familiar residential / convention style approach has proved to be very popular and permit's visitors to stop over for one or more nights, and sample this unique wargaming experience, and to get involved in our evening social activities.
Accommodation varies from really cheap student type rooms to better quality ensuite accommodation and it’s all on the University Campus within a javelin throw of the exhibition halls. Residents have full use of the Wargamers bar, which is booked till late for the entire weekend. In the evening there are added attractions such as the Wargamers Pub quiz and various other activities of interest to games players. The evening entertainment has proved to be a very successful feature of BRITCON and as usual there are lots of terrific prizes to be won.
The emphasis on the whole event is to have a weekend of fun in a wargaming setting. A significant hidden benefit is that Manchester University is right in the heart of the City with easy connections to many local attractions and parking on site is free to delegates throughout the event.
